In 1860 the united states was still expanding and debating over the wide contraversy of slavery. The republican party, led by Abraham Lincoln, had campaigned against expansion of slavery beond the states in wich it had alredy existed. Because of this when lincoln won the election the southern states declared that they would begin seceding befor Lincoln even took office on March fourth of 1861.
